Overview Joseph Mellick Leidy (1823-1891), one of the great American scientists of the 19th century, possessed a vast knowledge of the natural world. Scope and Contents Historian, minister of the gospel and amateur naturalist, Chamberlain assembled a collection of Eocene fossils which he bequeathed tot he Academy in memory of Isaac Lea, his father-in-law, and Frances Lea Chamberlain, his wife. This collection consists of more than 18,000 incoming letters receieved by the Academy betwen 1812 and 1920 and assembled by corresponding secretaries, Edward J. Nolan and James A. G. Rehn. A separate card index file assembled circa 1963 and arranged by last name of correspondent provides summary details about most letters.

Scope and Contents In April, 1889 the Provost of the University, William Pepper sent to the officers of the Academy an invitation to move their institution to the campus of the University. The Academy's Council considered the proposal, disapproved it, and reported its reasons in detail to the Academy's membership. The members, agreeing with the council, voted against the move. Two nearly identical statues of Edward Nolan sculpted in 1909 by Samuel Murray. Nolan is wearing a suit and tie, carry a book in his right hand and his left hand is resting in his trouser pocket. Nolans eye glasses are hanging from his jacket pocket.

Spackman Family, Ornithological workbook

Scope and Contents This volume represents a series of numbered sheets, continuing to no. 385, but with a great many gaps. Each sheet was repaired and the full gathering bound by a former librarian. Each carries a watercolor of a bird, the drawings seemingly copied from Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology. The volume was originally labeled: "Wilson's original drawings" but this note lightly crossed out and in the hand of E. J. Nolan another note "Not Wilson's drawings" inserted.
